Kezar Pub on the edge of Golden Gate Park has been a football pub for years and years, going all the way back to when San Francisco only had a few of these. Kezar’s owner, Cyril is a huge Liverpool supporter, and as a result, the pub has been a gathering place for Reds practically since it opened.
Back in 2008, some of the Liverpool supporters decided to start a more organized supporters group. Eventually renamed LFCSF, they achieved Official Supporters Club status, from Liverpool FC, for the San Francisco-Bay Area and supporters throughout Northern California.
We spoke with Coco Franco, LFCSF Chairperson, who’s been a Liverpool supporter for almost a decade and was drawn to the club, she says laughingly, in part due to, some lad named Steven Gerrard. She admits it’s been hard the last several years to see the club go through so many changes, but remains confident Liverpool will return to top form.
She estimates their group is over 500 strong and encourages all local Liverpool supporters to join them for the matches at Kezar. We meet up for all Liverpool matches, Coco says, Yes, even the 4:45AM and 5:30AM matches. We’re proud to call Kezar our home and we are happy to have such a great relationship with Cyril and the staff.
The group often presents special events and this weekend is no exception. They’re welcoming Ireland and Liverpool legend, Ronnie Whelan to their sister pub, The Mad Dog in the Fog, this Saturday night (10/3/15).
The midfielder and occasional defender made 493 appearances for the Reds, racking up 6 league titles, 3 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, and a European Cup.
Ronnie will speak about his career, as part of an event that will include door prizes, a raffle, and an auction for charity. For more information: LFCSF Ronnie Whelan Event.
