San Francisco newest professional sports team has arrived , as the San Francisco Deltas prepare to take the field Saturday night at Kezar Stadium for their inaugural match of the 2017 North American Soccer League (NASL) season.
Earlier today, Ian Stewart of San Francisco magazine ruminated on whether The City would embrace the newcomers. Only time will tell.
But it’s definitely a good time be lover of the beautiful game in San Francisco. Semi-pro, supporter owned San Francisco City Football Club starts its second season in the Premier Development League (PDL) in May, and tomorrow night, we have the Deltas.
Tomorrow City Hall and Coit Tower will be bathed in red light to commemorate the event, Mayor Ed Lee will will handle the coin toss, and the San Francisco Opera Center Alder Fellows will perform the National Anthem. Rec and Park’s head honcho, Phil Ginsburg who’s been behind the team’s efforts from the get-go will be on hand as well.
Despite San Francisco’s recent inclement weather, Saturday night is expected to chilly but clear, with no rain in the local forecast. And there are still tickets available. Fans have a plethora of seating options. They can choose to sit in a midfield section featuring nearly 5,000 seats recovered from Candlestick Park, the Supporters section, or splurge for VIP seating on the sideline in a covered players bench.
Normally, pre-games festivities (including a beer garden) would be held in the Kezar Triangle, but due to this week’s storms, the field there is waterlogged and must remain closed.
However, beginning about 3PM, Delta Force: The San Francisco Deltas Supporters Group is meeting up at Kezar Pub, before marching into the stadium, around 6PM. Delta Force has put together a game day guide here.
