Next Tuesday, the San Jose Earthquakes will take on Club América in front of a sold-out Avaya Stadium crowd. This will be the first of three International Champions Cup matches in the Bay Area this month. A week later, Manchester United will visit Avaya to face the Quakes and the following weekend, the Red Devils will head to Levi’s Stadium for a marquee match against FC Barcelona.
The ICC is an annual exhibition tournament featuring club teams from Europe and North America, in its third year in existence. Previous years have seen the likes of Everton, Juventus, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan visit the Bay Area.
While you can argue the games are meaningless, and complain about the absence of some top name players, for some fans, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the club they love, up close and personal.
